Two in the nest and one out (with a killer view)

Michael kelsey apartment blog

As we contemplate getting our two little girls out of their cribs and into big-girl beds, our eldest is collecting the keys to his first apartment in San Francisco.  He and his beautiful long-time girlfriend, Kelsey, have found their first apartment to share.  We celebrated this weekend by driving up and buying them a really nice little sofa for their new digs.

This place is tiny but just look at that killer view!    It's a studio apartment with a nice sized kitchen and bathroom but hardly room for anything else.  They used masking tape to tape off the space for the bed and computer desk so they'd know if there was room for seating for guests.  If I didn't see the tape on the floor, I might not have believed it.

Oh well, it's larger than Michael's room when he lived at home so that should be plenty right?

The apartment is in a good part of the city and there are three layers of security to get in.  It's an old building but the facilities are pretty updated.

The kids decided to paint the walls gray and green and I wasn't too sure about that but now I'm thinking that it's going to look great when they get everything fixed up.

We wish them both all the best as they embark on this exciting chapter of their life together.  Click the image for a larger view.

We threw Michael a surprise party for his 21st birthday.  We told him we were taking him to dinner and when he stopped by the house, I asked him to help me carry something from the kitchen.  As soon as he turned the corner, everyone screamed "surprise!"  I wasn't totally sure we managed to keep this a secret from him but he said he really was surprised!

Michael's girlfriend, Kelsey, was in on the whole thing and she came up with the idea of a pirate theme.  She helped pick out all of the decorations and invited all his friends.  We really couldn't have done this without her!  Thanks, Kelsey!

The "cake". Michael has never liked cake so each year he gets a pie - usually keylime. This one is keylime cheesecake!  It was amazingly good!

Happy 21st Birthday, Michael!

Twenty one years ago today, I became a mom for the first time.  This little baby boy grew up so quickly and became such an amazing man.

Here are pictures from last year's birthday.  I'll post something newer this weekend.

Remembering Marc

Marc was my son's best friend when we lived in Hemet.  They got into so much trouble together but I have even more happy memories of the two of them riding bmx bikes and just being adorable little boys.

I remember when Andrew and I were dating and we took our son Michael and his friend Marc to Universal Studios City Walk.  They were about 11 or 12 years old and we let them roam around unsupervised while we did the same.  When we met back up at the designated time, we discovered that they'd been playing in the water fountain (not designed for that purpose) and sliding down the escalator hand rail in their wet clothes.  They were having a blast and they'd been having a blast for hours!   We collected more than a few disapproving looks as we led the boys towards the parking lot.  They were sopping wet so they stripped down to their boxer shorts in the back seat and giggled as we took them through the fast food drive-thru for dinner on our way home.  We chatted about Monty Python and 'nerds' and other silly things as we drove back home to Hemet.  It was really fun and it's a day I'll never forget.  Never.  Ever.

My heart absolutely breaks for his family (and for my son).  I can't fathom the depth of loss they feel.  It's every mother's most horrible nightmare.

One of the best days of my life! (updated)

It's almost impossible to imagine that it's been 20 years since I saw this amazing little face for the first time but today my baby boy turns 20!   I can't help but choke back tears as I look at this picture because it really seems like only yesterday that I draped this Winney the Pooh blanket over the infant car seat and layed my sleeping newborn baby down and snapped this picture*.   He hated to be on his back and preferred his tummy or his side.  All these years later, he still prefers to sleep that way.

Time flies and in the blink of an eye our precious babies are in college and balancing social obligations and check books without us there to hold their hand.

Right this very moment, Andrew's brother and his wife are at the hospital waiting for the arrival of their first child (it was a girl!).  It's a beautiful day to be born!!  I can only wish them as much love and happiness as we've had with Michael all these years...  And many wonderful years to come!

Updated:  Here are pics of Michael taken last night.  I love that he still has that one dimple.  We love you and we're so proud of you, Michael!
