Lego head STUCK on Gwen's tooth!

Right after we finished dinner last night, Gwen skipped merrily into the living room to show us the clever thing she did.  She pulled the head off of one of her Lego toys, admired the little hole on the underside then got the brilliant idea to stick him on her tooth and bite down hard.

Yep, she capped her permanent tooth with a Lego head and he was stuck.

Seriously stuck.

But he was really really cool!  Notice how she got him facing perfectly forward?

We tried to remove it using olive oil but it wasn't budging.  If you've even owned a Lego set, you know how tough these toys are.  I don't think it's possible to break or even damage one and we were worried that we'd hurt her tooth long before we hurt her smirking yellow tooth ornament.

I called our Dentist and left a message with his after-hours answering service then I grabbed the camera because.... well, I'm the type of mother who needs to document stuff like this.   Once upon a time, I might have been embarrassed to admit that but everyone knows it now and my kids have never known any other life than one where Mommy takes pictures of them eating pie off of the floor before making them stop.

But back to the current situation.

Gosh, this kid makes me smile!  This is EXACTLY what I'd expect Gwen to do because she's fearless and only thinks about how much fun it might be to do something.  Never about the consequences of doing it.  But she's a smart girl and she must have thought that it would come off just as easily as it went on.  Sorry babe.  You were wrong.

Thankfully Nana and Granddad are visiting this week so they stayed home with Maddy while Daddy and I took Gwen to the Dentist.   On the way there, we laughed about how this wasn't something we would have ever dreamed we'd be doing at 9:00 PM tonight.  But we were grateful that our first dental "emergency" was something this non traumatic.

Dr Fred gently pulled with rubber gloves and prodded with pokey things but the yellow dude wouldn't even wiggle a little bit.  Finally he used the drill to cut it from the top to bottom and then it came right off!  Gwen was sooooo brave through it all!   She did great!

Hey Mr Cool!  You don't look so tough now, do you!

Butterfly Silhouette

I've been playing with Silhouettes.  At first, I thought this would be easy since I'm pretty good at back-lighting my photos and unintentionally ruining them with shadowed faces.  However, it seems there might be a bit more to creating a good silhouette when you're actually trying to do it on purpose!

Last night we headed to the local park to pose against the blue/gold sky as the sun set.  We tried a few different settings and paid close attention to capturing Maddy's pretty profile.  To make it more interesting, we added some props (the paper butterfly was our favorite but we also used a flower and bubbles).

In the end, we owe just about all of our success to the fact that Maddy loves chocolate and will do just about anything for even the smallest piece of it.  Even a single little m&m will encourage her to do anything I ask.  Every time she held a perfect pose, I'd pop one into her mouth!

This photo was too pretty to just post all by itself so I added an interesting matte and some embellishments.  But the photo itself is unaltered.  You can see the original here>  Silhouette butterfly-000001

Laugh Every Day! (updated)

This weekend has been all about the new pool, family time, and laughter!

In this photo, I'm throwing little baby rubber duckies at Gwen and she's trying to catch them and throw them back at me (you can see one of them at the top of the photo).  She never caught any because she was laughing too hard to concentrate on the task!   I thought this photo was special because it really captures Gwen's personality -- her effervescence!

Is there anything more sweet than the sound of a child's laughter?  To me, hearing my kids laugh and seeing their beautiful smiling faces is the very best part of being a mom.  And speaking of moms, happy Mother's Day to all of my special family and friends who are moms or moms-in-waiting!

Throwing duckies!

Update:  We recently left the heater on the spa (aka little pool) all night so it held a 95 degree temp from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM.  Arrrrgggghhh!  How much do you think that little mistake will cost us?

I ♥ Faces with Hats!

Maddy's hat

Our little Madeline always makes me laugh.   Today, we were driving around in our van and the girls were begging for gum.  We're not picky about treats in our family but gum is something that Mommy retains as a reward for only the very best behavior and the girls are never ever allowed to ask for it!

I explained once again that they couldn't request gum but could only partake of it's fruity sugar-free goodness by being VERY well behaved and then Mommy - without any prompting from them - would magically produce it as a reward for their self control and impeccable good manners (laughing to myself as I said this).  I knew that eventually I'd be giving them some gum but I hoped they'd be inspired to behave for as long as possible.

Well, many minutes of blissful silence passed before a small voice (Maddy's) whispered out from the back seat:

"Mommy, I'm not asking for gum."

Daddy and I looked at each other and just cracked up!  We love our children so much and right now we're thrilled that we can completely control our two youngest with a 12 cent stick of sugarless gum!  As veteran parents of a full grown son, we know it doesn't get easier than this, folks.

Swiss miss reflection blog

One of the really fun things about participating in a photo contest is that you start to see the world around you in slightly more detail.  For example, this week's theme is "Reflections" and I've known about it for a while I so I catch myself noticing every time my kids stand anywhere near a reflective surface:  My sunglasses, a mirror, or slide, a playground "bubble", a tea kettle.  Sometimes, I even arrange it so it's no coincidence that we decided to make hot chocolate with our shiny teapot yesterday and I had the camera handy.

We love chocolate in almost any form around here and I make hot chocolate extra special (and creamy!) by using half boiling water and half warm milk.  Gwenny was mixing the warm milk with the Swiss Miss powder while we waited for the pot to boil.  Maddy's not so keen on hot chocolate but she loves marshmallows and will snack on them straight out of the bag (that's my girl!).

I had so much fun on this week's theme and I'm sorry I'm only allowed to post one photo here.  I picked the one I liked the best but there were so many others that I'd love to share so go take a look at our "Reflections" flickr photo album and tell me if you think I picked the best one.

Note:  I've added photos to that album since this post originally was published.
