October 30, 2004

Today, I applied for my passport. Andrew applied to renew his passport since it expires in January of 06.

Our final homestudy visit is Monday! Time is flying! We hope to have our homestudy report in one or two weeks and get our dossier submitted before the end of this year!

If things go as quickly as they are for the other groups, we should have our baby by mid summer! It's hard to believe that it could be that soon! But if that's true, then our little Gwendolyn is already born. This makes me really nervous since I have to trust that strangers are taking good care of her and she's not cold or hungry or suffering for love. It was much easier to imagine that she was safely inside the womb of her birthmom and not yet born. Please, God, look after my baby girl!

Baby dreams

I had a dream about the baby last night. I dreamt that she was sitting on the floor next to her "Auntie" from the orphanage and she had a blanket over her head with just one eye shyly peeking out at me. Her Auntie was trying to encourage her to be friendly to me but she obviously thought I was just a curious stranger. When I told her "I'm her mommy", her eyes lit up and she pushed the baby towards me. I picked her up (with the blanket still over her head) and hugged her to me but she remained nervous and rigid. I closed my eyes and smiled. I didn't worry that she was uncomfortable because I knew, in time, she never be able to remember a time when I wasn't her mommy.

I'm usually good at analyzing my dreams and I think the blanket was there because I don't know what my baby looks like. I think the enthusiasm from the Orphanage worker (Auntie) was because I'd read "The Lost Daughters of China" recently and I came away with the feeling that China really is appreciative of us adopting these children. The child's bashful discomfort when I hugged her was probably my mind telling itself that it will take time to bond but it will happen!

We picked Gwen's name

We picked a name tonight (ironically over dinner in our favorite Chinese restaurant). So, our daughter will be...

The other name we liked was Madeline Abigail so it looks like that will be Gwendolyn's little sister (or, perhaps twin sister?). Welcome to the family, little girls! You're already named and you might not even be born yet!

Our Paperchase

We had our first meeting with ACCEPT this afternoon.  They're our agency and USAA is our China Facilitator. We paid our Agency Fee and got our packet! There sure are lots of forms but, of course, our baby will prove to be more than worth it!

Originally, I had just Gwendolyn's paperchase listed here but now that we've adopted Madeline, I've added a column for her. The chart, below, might be a bit hard to read because it's resized to fit on the blog.  Click on the chart to see the full size version.

Gwen's paperchase was exactly three months from the date we signed the agency agreement (Start date) to the date they sent our dossier to China.

  • DTC was the first week of January 2005.
  • LID was the last week of January 2005.
  • Referral was July 28th, 2005 and Gotcha was September 5th.
  • Total time from Start to Gotcha was just under 11 months.

Maddy's paperchase was 1.5 months from the date we signed the agency agreement (start date) to the date they sent our dossier to China.

  • DTC was early May 2006.
  • LID was May 15, 2006.
  • Our travel authorization was 68 days later and Gotcha was Aug 23rd, 2006.
  • Total time from Start to Gotcha was just under 5 months.
