Two in the nest and one out (with a killer view)

Michael kelsey apartment blog

As we contemplate getting our two little girls out of their cribs and into big-girl beds, our eldest is collecting the keys to his first apartment in San Francisco.  He and his beautiful long-time girlfriend, Kelsey, have found their first apartment to share.  We celebrated this weekend by driving up and buying them a really nice little sofa for their new digs.

This place is tiny but just look at that killer view!    It's a studio apartment with a nice sized kitchen and bathroom but hardly room for anything else.  They used masking tape to tape off the space for the bed and computer desk so they'd know if there was room for seating for guests.  If I didn't see the tape on the floor, I might not have believed it.

Oh well, it's larger than Michael's room when he lived at home so that should be plenty right?

The apartment is in a good part of the city and there are three layers of security to get in.  It's an old building but the facilities are pretty updated.

The kids decided to paint the walls gray and green and I wasn't too sure about that but now I'm thinking that it's going to look great when they get everything fixed up.

We wish them both all the best as they embark on this exciting chapter of their life together.  Click the image for a larger view.

Preschool Graduation

Today was Gwen and Maddy's last day in Preschool.  Starting Monday, they're in the Kindergarten class!  They've been going to this school since they were three years old so it's not much of a change but it's going to help transition them into public school Kindergarten in August.  Even so, it still feels very significant.

Gwen was surprised about the "promotion" and kept making sure I knew that she was still four years old.   When I told her that she was going to Kindergarten because she's a big girl, she informed me that her teeth haven't popped out yet (something we once made the mistake of telling her would happen when she was a big girl).

Maddy is just fine with all of this as long as Gwen is in there with her.  We'll see how she does in August  when she and Gwen are separated.  Is the policy in our school district that twins are not in the same class.  We still have a couple of months to help her get used to that idea.

Here they are today.  Aren't they cute!

How the heck did she do that?

The girls were playing in the pool while I sat nearby and checked email on my laptop computer.  When I glanced up, I saw this:

Obviously, I did a double-take then laughed and ran for the camera.    Maddy is a limber little cutiepie but I didn't think she was really capable of getting her feet into that ring all by herself.

Hee hee... Okay, here's the bigger picture:

Aunt Laura and Aunt Judy

Golden Gate Park San Francisco
I've known Laura and Judy for more than 20 years (Judy is Michael's God Mother) and I'm so lucky to have them in my life. Obviously, the girls adore their Aunt Laura and Aunt Judy too. This photo was taken last weekend in San Francisco near The Cliff House restaurant.

Here we are being silly in the Golden Gate Park while Gwen tries to figure out what the heck we're doing.

 Golden Gate Park San Francisco
We rented a quadracycle and the girls thought it was peachy. They kept telling us to pedal faster. As if we were holding back.

Golden Gate Park San Francisco
These things are pretty fun but they're not as easy to pedal as they look. Even with four people sharing the labor! We rented this in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

A pretty photo of Maddy at the Arboretum. It's a fun (and beautiful!) place for the kids to explore.

The squirrels are very friendly. They'll come right up and eat out of your hand! Here's a pretty one posing for a photo.

The Japanese Tea Garden (also in Golden Gate Park) was also really beautiful. This was my favorite photo of the day.

Today, we skipped preschool and took Aunt Judy to Gilroy Gardens then we drove straight from there to the airport and said goodbye. Hopefully we'll see Laura and Judy again soon. We already miss them!

We threw Michael a surprise party for his 21st birthday.  We told him we were taking him to dinner and when he stopped by the house, I asked him to help me carry something from the kitchen.  As soon as he turned the corner, everyone screamed "surprise!"  I wasn't totally sure we managed to keep this a secret from him but he said he really was surprised!

Michael's girlfriend, Kelsey, was in on the whole thing and she came up with the idea of a pirate theme.  She helped pick out all of the decorations and invited all his friends.  We really couldn't have done this without her!  Thanks, Kelsey!

The "cake". Michael has never liked cake so each year he gets a pie - usually keylime. This one is keylime cheesecake!  It was amazingly good!
